About Us
We are a small family business based in West Wales. Well, that’s an exaggeration really. Clive does all the work whilst Michele, as you might expect, provides the brains and we have two children who hinder rather than help! We began on a part time basis selling a few CDs on eBay in December 2001 and continued on a small scale until May 2005 when Clive took the plunge and gave up his full time job as a Mortgage Advisor to run the business. Things took off much quicker than expected and Michele left her job as an Administrative Manager in September 2005 to help cope with the volume. This meant that Clive could no longer use his trick of lying next to the radiator five minutes before Michele came home to make his cheeks go red and pretend that he has been hard at it all day!
Cez, 15, is now one of our occasional book listers and Josh, 12, will lick the odd stamp at a push but overall, they are both fed up of waiting for tea whilst Dad answers just one more e-mail!
We both feel that the best part of the job is making friends from customers who are delighted with their purchases. These include Mike, "The Old Git from Lanzarote", Michelle, a Cornish professional singer and Paddy whose books vanish into the South African ether whilst we rush replacements to his son in London. We also enjoyed hearing from one of our regulars who gave up buying from Amazon because every time he wanted something it was always us that had it cheapest. Now he just comes straight to us!
In July 2006 we moved the business to West Wales so that we could expand our stock and live a more normal life without a bedroom full of books! It didn't work. Since then we have expanded further, first into the Pub next door and now to an old cheese factory that is once again providing employment for those in and around our village. We still have a bedroom full of books though! We have also acquired twelve staff along the way as well. The most important selection criteria is to ensure they share our enthusiasm and our commitment to customer service
As we share the house and our lives with 8 cats, 2 dogs, 3 gerbils, 2 fish and a rabbit, please buy generously. We have a lot of mouths to feed! Apparently Clive made some rash promise about ducks and chickens for the Spring as well. Must have been an unguarded moment!
Clive is a Crystal Palace season ticket holder (Apparently, there is no known cure for this malady) who takes his football far too seriously whilst Michele isn’t and doesn’t. Michele is therefore the stabilizing force in the partnership whilst Clive is a nervous wreck.
